Abstract:
We begin by discussing the potential advantages that least-square finite element methods (LSFEMs) possess compared to their Galerkin-based cousins. We then explore the important connections between LSFEMs for second-order elliptic problems and the Kelvin and Dirichlet principles. In the end, we conclude that if one uses finite element spaces inherited from stable discretizations of these classical principles, one can obtain optimal accuracy in all useful norms and also obtain a LSFEM that has good mass conservation properties. Abstract:
Velocity averaging is used to study the regularizing effects in quasilinear second-order equations, L( , ) = S( ) using their underlying kinetic formulations, L( , )X =g . Our study of velocity averaging applies to a large class of operators satisfying the so-called truncation multiplier property, which is shown to include all L’s of degree 2. In particular, we improve previous regularity statements for multidiemsnional conservation laws, and we derive completely new regularity results for related convection diffusion and elliptic equations driven by degenerate, non-isotropic diffusion.
