Abstract | Quantifying the effectiveness of various water management policies and control measures is critical for achieving better water management, however, a full-scale impact assessment of their effectiveness is lacking. Herein, we show a quantified relationship between Sustainable Development Goals for Clean Water & Sanitation (SDG6) and health indicators based on data from 142 countries over a period of over 10 years. In doing so, we have con-ducted a qualitative evaluation and verification of the implementation effects of water management measures. We observed spatiotemporal variations in health indicators for countries with different incomes for most of the SDG6 indicators. Globally, access to basic-drinking water (SDG6.1a) improved sanitation and hygiene (SDG6.2), where improved water sources (SDG6.3) can significantly affect health. We also found that 49% of water management measures were significantly effective in middle-and low-income countries. In addition, China has successfully strengthened specific measures to achieve SDG6, and reduced waterborne diseases by 98.8% in the past 40 years. Furthermore, there is no 'one-size fits all' measure for countries in terms of improving sanitation and health. This study provides guidelines on how to implement effective sanitation measures according to a country's income-level, which will assist policymakers, researchers and governments, in implementing effective sanitation and health measures. |
