Abstract Based on student data of an English MOOC course on the well-known MOOC website, xuetangx in China, this study conducted a cluster analysis of online participation patterns of Chinese students in MOOC courses. This study focused on four dimensions of completion, procrastination, regularity, and interaction. Finally, nine behavioral variables related to video watching, self-testing, and forum interaction were selected to explore the participation patterns of online learning. Based on these nine behavioral variables, the two-stage clustering method was used to finally generate four groups of participation patterns. Through the analysis of the participation characteristics of these four groups, the study divided the four groups of participation patterns into a goal-oriented high-engagement pattern, a performance-oriented high-engagement pattern, a goal-oriented low-engagement pattern, and a performance-oriented low-engagement pattern.
