Abstract Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is favored for its abundant bandwidth. However, the sampling rate scales up with the large bandwidth, thus making it difficult to implement high-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). In addition, a large-scale array is employed to overcome the high path loss of the mmWave channels. Due to the large number of antennas and the directional feature of the channels, a base station (BS) will mainly rely on the uplink sounding signals instead of the explicit channel estimation to obtain the angles of arrivals/departures (AoAs/AoDs) to perform directional beamforming. In this paper, an estimation method based on one-bit compressive sensing (CS) is proposed. Furthermore, the impact of the estimation error is characterized. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve a comparable power gain to the high-resolution ADCs structures.
