AbstractIn the work of Amann, Schmiedl and Seifert (2010 J. Chem. Phys. 132 041102), the authors derived a sufficient criterion to identify a non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) in a three-state Markov system based on the coarsegrained information of two-state trajectories. In this paper, we present a mathematical derivation and provide a probabilistic interpretation of the Amann-Schmiedl-Seifert (ASS) criterion. Moreover, the ASS criterion is compared with some other criterions for a NESS.
