Abstract Control points planning is one of the most important components in archwire bending using robot. Generally speaking, the more control points we choose, the more accurate target archwire curve we will obtain. However, at the same time, the working efficiency will decrease rapidly with the increasing of the control points' number. In this paper, two algorithms, finite point derivation algorithm (FPDA) and incremental algorithm (IA), are proposed to plan the optimal control points' number. Then the control points obtained by these two algorithms are fitted into curve. The area error between the ideal archwire curve and fitted archwire curve is used as the parameter to determine which algorithm is better and how many control points is optimal. At last, the archwire bending robot is used to bend straight line into form according to the obtained control points information. The experimental results indicate that the FPDA is much more efficient. ? 2012 ICIC International.
