Abstract Based on plasma explosive emission model, the self-consistent and 2-1/2 dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell code is employed to simulate the characteristics of a magnetically insulated ion diode for intense pulsed ion beams. The trajectories of electrons and protons in the anode-cathode gap of the diode, the time-dependence of the diode current Id, the electron loss current density to anode je and the extracted proton current density jp are presented at externally insulating magnetic field in the range of 2Bcrit and the maximum diode voltage of 300 kV. The effects of the magnetic field on the virtual cathode, the diode impedance as well as the overall ion current efficiency of the diode are discussed.
