Abstract Recent studies have proposed a novel 'listen-and-talk' (LAT) protocol for cognitive radio, in which secondary users (SUs) can sense and access the spectrum simultaneously with the assistance of full-duplex techniques. In this paper, we consider a LAT based cognitive radio network (CRN) consisting of SUs equipped with two antennas, and study the cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) problem to improve sensing perfor-mance. We derive the analytical miss detection and false alarm probabilities of the system, and make comparison with the traditional 'listen-before-talk' (LBT) CSS. Theoretical analysis and simulation results verify the proposed CSS method. Results indicate that when the secondary transmit power is low, the LAT CSS outperforms the LBT one in the secondary throughput. We also find out that there exists a transmit power-throughput tradeoff, and an optimal secondary transmit power can be designed to maximize the achievable throughput for the CRNs. ? 2014 IEEE.
