Abstract The shadow spots, which are obtained by using the optical method of caustics to experimentally determine dynamic stress intensity factors, are usually interpreted on the basis of an elastic model. In this paper, an attempt is made to consider the effect of crack-tip plastic field about the elastic-plastic materials, and dynamic fracture toughness of Y4 steel is measured by means of the reflective caustics using typical three point bending specimens. This method also is applied to determine the dynamic fracture toughness of cement blocks with some mix designs.
