Abstract The quaternary ammonium salts are important extractants for rare earth separation. However, the reaction mechanism of extraction is not well known. The extraction behaviour depends on the anion in the extraction system. For example, in the nitrate system the distribution ratio of rare earths decreases with the increases of atomic number of the rare earths, while in the thiocyanate system it behaves contrarily. In order to explain these phenomena a study on the coordination chemistry of lanthanide nitrates and thiocyanates in aqueous solution, structural determination of the extracted complexes and comparison of the IR spectra of the loaded organic phase and those of the solid extracted complexes was carried out.
